While we spoke about five popular 2014 wedding cake trends last week, I saved the best for last, because brides – ruffle wedding cakes are sticking around! Light and gorgeous, giving an elegantly whimsical feel to your reception, these confections are sure to please your guests eyes as well as their taste buds.

Often styled in a solid color (looking loveliest in white with a colored accent) or a gradient effect – which is a slow progression up from your boldest wedding color to your lightest, ruffle wedding cakes are a feast for the eyes! Showcase the ruffles alone, with delicate sugar flowers, as accents on an otherwise plain cake, or use them to style a vintage or elegantly modern look…these little icing confections are incredibly versatile!

Pair this look with a light taste, such as lemon, have your baker smother it over a white devil’s food cake, and you’ve got a cake that’s unforgettable! Alternately, pair a lightly colored outside with a deep, rich inner cake, such as red velvet or German chocolate. There are few things better than a surprise inside a wedding cake, and ruffle wedding cakes present a delicious opportunity!
