Wedding Cake Mondays: Smushing the Wedding Cake into Your Spouse’s Face

Feb 6, 2012 by

So the whole smushing the wedding cake into your spouse’s face “tradition” is weird, right? If you cruise around the web, you’ll find that this topic sparks a lot of controversy. Some people think is totally disrespectful, other people think those people should just loosen up, and a third contingent of blushing brides are concerned about the stains that may be left on a very expensive dress. Pretty Clever Bride is leaning toward the “Just don’t do it” side of the debate, but at the very least she thinks the bride and groom should discuss this in advance and be very clear that you both want to smush the wedding cake into your spouse’s face.

It also remains a bit unclear about where this “tradition” comes from. There are some suggestions that it’s a variation on the Roman tradition of breaking bread over the bride’s head for prosperity or fortune or some such. Still other’s think the tradition of feeding cake to one another symbolizes the commitment to metaphorically “feed” one another forever. That take of course makes the smushing of the cake into your spouse’s face rather disrespectful, no?

I think this could be done in a fun and lighthearted way. But I also think it could go horribly tragically wrong. But I leave it to you, my blushing brides… smush the cake or don’t smush the cake into your spouse’s face? Let me know what you think!
