Wedding Invitations Sundays: Choosing a Font

Jun 17, 2012 by

Choosing a font for your wedding invitations can be intimidating, with literally hundreds to select from. With so many out there (many of them free!), choosing just one can be difficult. There’s no easy one-size-fits-all font for weddings; old fashioned and flowery script fonts are a very popular choice, but so are modern, and sans-serif ones. Everything depends on what you’ve decided on for your big day. Are you having a swanky formal wedding, or a casual outdoor BBQ reception? Is it a cocktail party, or a beach affair? The swirls and lines of your chosen font can help you set the tone.

Time to start searching out fonts on the Internet, to get a sense of what’s out there. But where to start? First, decide on your style, or the style of your event; are you looking for fancy, flowery, old fashioned, formal, retro, or simple elegance? Keep that style in mind during your search, and think about whether a font evokes or conveys that style. Second, try it out! I can’t stress this enough – you need to test the font out on your actual wedding invitation text to see if it works with your design, if it’s legible, if it fits properly. Try it in italics, in bold, all capitals, or in small caps – and don’t forget to take a look at the numbers, too. Fonts are designed with a purpose and medium in mind, so no matter how much you love that one typeface, it may not work at all on your invitation.
